Tim Newman is a musician and producer based in Bristol, UK. Tim has worked on releases featuring David J (Bauhaus), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Black Francis (The Pixies) and Adrian Utley (Portishead) amongst others.
Tim started creating music in the early 1990s as a founder member of ambient electronic group Skywalker – a favourite at raves in the Bristol area. In the late ‘90s Tim soundtracked a number of TV shows, including Grandstand, the British Rally Championships and Cutting Edge.
In 2001, Tim formed part of the Wireless Nation project with artists including Roots Manuva and Asian Dub Foundation. Music by Tim has been released on numerous labels including Reverb Worship, 267 Lattajjaa, Striate Cortex, Rusted Rail, Gran Kru, Last Hurrah and A Recordings (run by Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre).
Tim currently works for a variety of artists, including most recently Alex Furgusson of Psychic TV and as an ongoing producer / collaborator with David J from Bauhaus. Tim continues to work as a producer for Glass Modern Records, appearing on some of the label’s recent output. Tim is also a founder member of the dream pop trio Love Is A Ghost.

Alex Furgusson was a key member of Psychic TV alongside Genises P Orridge of Throbbing Gristle. In this collection of self recorded demos, Alex Furgusson’s songwriting is both melodic and insightful. The recordings were edited, mixed and mastered by Tim Newman.
The production duo Golden Cloud, consisting of Tim Newman and Nigel Gwennap remix and dub out a collection of King Gizzard demos. The highly inventive results mix krautrock, dub and psych with plenty of left-turns and surprises along the way. Available on lathe cut 12 vinyl through Hessian Claw.
Released for Record Store Day 2025, this poignant live album presents Epic Soundtrack’s last ever live performance back in 1997. Tim Newman was asked by Glass Modern to edit and clean up the recordings for release. Epic Soundtracks was a founding member of post punk legends Swell Maps, and later played in Crime and the City Solution.
The December 2024 issue of MOJO Magazine included a CD themed around dystopian sci-fi in rock music. The CD included a track called The Present created by David J and Tim Newman featuring spoken work by Alan Moore. The track reworked audio from the original V for Vendetta sessions.
An exclusive album of outtakes and remixes from the V for Vendetta reissue sessions, created specifically for a unique artwork by Gabor Nemeth in Budapest. The full album was subsequently reissued as a CD to accompany issue 5 of the Night Flies zine.
Love Is A Ghost create an electronic remix EP in which they re-work material from their recent Vampire release. In stark contrast to their usual ethereal sound, the mood here is experimental electronica and compressed cut-up breaks. Love Is A Ghost shake things up marvellously with a surprisingly offering.
Following the success of the Love and Rockets Albums 1985 to 1996 box set, each album receives a standalone release in black vinyl. Hot Trip To Heaven, the band’s 1994 exploration of electronica and the rave scene contains a Tim Newman edit of an unreleased remix of single This Heaven.
Loner was originally written for Mia Doi Todd following her spellbinding performance at the Silverlake Lounge in LA. This release contains a number of recordings, remixes and tangents from the original song by Tim Newman in collaboration with David J. Includes Hungarian spoken word and use of the Tunetrace app by Ed Burton which converts images into music.

An incredible 30 years after their first studio session, Tube Screamer finally release their debut album. Featuring Malcolm Booy and Nigel Gwennap from The Junkie Gibbons, in collaboration with Tim Newman. Entrances is an aggressive burst of electro-punk with plenty of left turns. Think Suicide meets Dr Mix and the Remix.
The Vibrafuzz Family got lost in the cyclical patterns of Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The eight tracks are composed of four sequenced organ workouts and four dis-assembled backwards space jams. Cosmic flutes abound. Released on Tim Newman’s own Hessian Claw imprint on lathe cut vinyl, cd and download.
A meditation on the outlaw aspect of the life of notorious beat writer, William S. Burroughs – a man David J counted as a personal friend. This recording sees David J collaborating with Steven Brown of renowned post punk ensemble Tuxedomoon and long-time collaborator Tim Newman. Together they create a dense shifting soundscape.
Mexico’s No Devotion Records release a compilation of highlights from David J’s Patron releases. Tim Newman produced and collaborated with David J on the spoken word and piano epic “His Majesty The Executioner”. A testament to both David’s diverse musical range and distinctive style and energy. Available on download and in limited quantities on vinyl, CD.
Love and Rockets release a box set containing the band's first six original albums on colored vinyl. The Albums 1985-1996 boxset is limited to 1000 copies worldwide and have all been remastered by Sean McGee at Abbey Road Studios. Tim Newman provided a bonus track edit of a previously unreleased remix of single This Heaven.
The latest release by Love Is A Ghost sees them team up with Australian based producer Whitehall Rec. The ethereal dream pop vibe of LIAG’s previous work continues on this beautiful release. The EP explores the band’s love of deconstructions and is the broadest and most ambitious collection from Love Is A Ghost yet.
Independent Project Records released a compilation featuring a remix of David J’s Chinatown in which Tim Newman creates an ambient soundscape out of unused overdubs from the original recording sessions. Packaged in a letterpress printed folder. Includes a full-color 24-page booklet featuring an introduction by Rolling Stone writer/editor David Fricke.
Fawns of Love’s new EP titled Unrequited Love Songs includes revised versions of tracks that were first released on their debut album Who Cares About Tomorrow and 7 Falling/Standing in 2017. Featuring a remix by Wor_xspace (member of BMX Bandits, Teenage Fanclub) and eight abstract remixes by Love Is A Ghost.
Love Is A Ghost returns with their stunning new EP, Your Last Day. Channelling the early 4AD catalogue with lyrics from the darker regions of the psyche. LIAG have created an incredible series of atmospheric, ethereal and haunting pieces. Love is a Ghost explore a palette then deconstruct it, akin to a cubist painting where each angle would offer an alternative to the main theme.
While Bauhaus were waiting to continue their reunion shows, founding member David J reworked unused recording from his archive of tapes and diaries from the early 80s in collaboration with sound sculptor Tim Newman. Includes a vocal contribution from Black Francis of The Pixies with guitar overdubs by Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive and Adrian Utley of Portishead.
Part Two of David J’s collaboration with Tim Newman. Old tapes and discarded ideas, some dating back to Bauhaus’ early ‘80s heyday, are reworked and developed into a cerebral magic(k) incantation. Cut up poetry and impressionistic drones form the core of this intriguing second volume.
The final single from the acclaimed London band Cesarians was an electro-disco reworking by Tim Newman of their superb Going Blonde on Glass Modern. The Cesarians included singer Charlie Finke, pianist Justine Armitage and an all woman wind section. In April 2010 The Cesarians supported Adam Ant at his notorious comeback gig at The Scala in London.
Love Is A Ghost launched their career with the beautiful Siren EP. The release opens with the haunting Siren followed by a series of abstract deconstructions. Inspired by 90s remix EPs, Siren was reworked in more experimental ways, often using the original track as raw material for impressionistic collage. Think a deconstructed Cocteau Twins or This Mortal Coil.
Thurston Moore and friends recorded an album under the name Foot as part of the Canal Street Series at Jimbo’s Pad, NYC in the early days of No Moore, winter 1996. Glass Modern asked Tim Newman to remix and reimagine the album for an exclusive vinyl release. Released on coloured vinyl in the UK for Record Store Day.
Released in a die-cut sleeve for Record Store Day 2019, Glass Modern issued an expanded re-issue of the 1984 Glass Records EP. The original soundtrack to the graphic novel “V for Vendetta” by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. Featuring two new tracks by electronic composer Tim Newman especially for this release, including the voice of Alan Moore himself.
‘Missive To An Angel From The Halls Of Infamy And Allure’ features contributions from Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), Toby Dammit (Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds), Paul Wallfish (Swans), Sean Eden (Luna), Rose McGowan, and producer / musician Tim Newman. David J sees the album as the culmination of 36 years of solo and collaborative work.
Originally released in 1981, Love Is Strange has been hailed as a form of proto-darkwave and has appeared on numerous electronica compilations since. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release, Tim Newman was asked to remix Love Is Strange and its B side Shimahero. The resulting EP was released digitally by Glass Modern and on 12" by German label Minimal Kombinat.
Tim Newman and long-time collaborator Nigel Gwennap immerse themselves in ’70s German proto-electronica for their debut album as Golden Cloud. Pulsing synths and pattering vintage drum machines sit under zonked out guitar figures. Recorded in under eight hours during one rainy Bristol weekend. Time well spent.
Kanreki is a Japanese celebration of a person's 60th birthday, marking the 60 years required for a person to finish a cycle on this earth. To mark David J’s 60th, his manager Darvin Meiners asked each of David’s collaborators to record one of David’s songs. Tim and Sarah Newman covered the Crocodile Tears era out-take “A Day In The Life Of The One That Got Away”.
The Humble Bee (Craig Tattersal, formerly of Hood) continues to explores texture and patina in audio in this haunting release. Tim Newman created a remix / dub version, which was included in a special edition of this release. Includes singer Char on a track which formed the template for the dream-pop band Love Is A Ghost, formed by Tim, Craig and Char soon after.
Peter Murphy celebrated 40 Years of Bauhaus with the Ruby Celebration, reuniting with David J. Recorded live at Brixton Academy, London. Available as deluxe triple vinyl and limited edition double CD. Tim Newman contributed an ethereal backing track for Stigmata Matyr which was used throughout the tour and in the recent Bauhaus reunion shows.
Released on 10" on ‘A’ Recordings, a label owned by Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Alongside the title track, the EP features Tim Newman’s instrumental arrangement of new track Ascension alongside David’s acoustic demo. The EP reached No 4 on the UK vinyl singles chart and No 6 in the all physical sales chart.
Following swiftly on the heels of GLR Freaks Out Big Time, GLR released Homegrown Vol 2. This great compilation features Vibrafuzz Family act Tenor Fax, who contributed the track League One from an bizarre unreleased EP of electropop football results. The ful EP contains a track for each English football division.
“…Its Friday night and I’m venturing out. Table tennis at the Page Park Community Centre. No-one’s there, except a couple of old fellas at the bar. Fuck. Then I remembered Andy’s email asking for tracks for this compilation. Recorded Friday night, mixed Saturday morning, with just a Telecaster and loads of FX pedals.”
The ninth studio album by David J (of Bauhaus) features three songs produced by Tim Newman: ‘Feel Like Robert Johnson’, ‘(She’s got) Chinatown in the Rain in Her Eyes’ and ‘Ascension’. The three tracks also include Tim on a variety of instruments including guitar and dulcimer. Vagabond Songs features a disarmingly charming and heart-felt collection of acoustic songs.
Released on 267 Latajjaa, an experimental music label from Helsinki, Tim Newman’s second solo album is made up of heavy guitar drones and processed Indian loops. The album title comes from a description of King Crimson in The Wire magazine, “a truce between the cerebral and the brutish” just seemed to sum the album up.
Vibrafuzz were Tim Newman, Charlie Cudlip and Olly Page. The Oneness is comprised of two epic 20 min kraut psych jams. Tim said “We wanted to make an album like the prog records of the early 70’s that had just two epic tracks. The album was inspired by a review of an Ash Ra Tempel by Julian Cope. On finally hearing the Ash Ra album it sounded nothing like ours …”
The debut solo CD by Tim Newman represents an exploration of traditional Indonesian Gamelan music. Vital weekly said of the album: “I think this is an excellent release... quiet, rhythmic, introspective. Never fast, never loud. Tranquility all round.” Released as a limited edition through the prolific and artfully designed Reverb Worship label.
The second compilation CD from Striate Cortex features an exclusive Vibrafuzz track, Freak Ballad. Vibrafuzz have shrunk to a two piece following Olly Page’s return to Argentina. Vibrafuzz move closer to Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain here. Norman Records said “a psych fuzzy guitar thing from Vibrafuzz complete with more wah-wah than you could shake a shitty stick at...”
A compilation of Vibrafuzz Family material released on Fourier Transform as a hand numbered CD and free download. When asked to submit material for the Concentric Spaces Vol 2 compilation on Striate Cortex, Vibrafuzz sent in this collection of tracks. Although not originally intended as an album in itself, the tracks seemed to work well together, so Vibrafuzz decided to offer it for release on Fourier Transform.
Vibrafuzz contributed a track to a compilation on Bristol’s Green Leaf Records. The download only release explores the psychedelic side of Bristol’s underground music scene. Green Leaf is run by local musician and guitar teacher Alex Emm. The compilation is available as a free download on the Green Leaf website now.
A collaboration with James DeMalplaquet, later of The Miserable Rich, resulted in joint composition Muswell appearing on the cover CD of Future Music Magazine. At the time of writing, Tim and James are collaborating once again on an exciting project featuring some high profile artists. More information to be revealed shortly.
Gran Kru Records was formed by UK rap collective MSI and Asylum. The Wireless Nation project brought together the talents of Asian Dub Foundation, Roots Manuva, Maxim (The Prodigy) and Grooverider, to demand that UK radio stations air a quota of UK rap and hip hop at a time when the UK charts were dominated by American rap and R&B.
The Miserable Rich are a ‘chamber pop’ band from Brighton including members of the touring bands for Mumford and Sons and Bonobo. 12 Ways To Count sees singer James DeMalplaquet revisit Muswell, a song composed in collaboration with Tim Newman. The album became especially popular in Germany, where The Miserable Rich still enjoy a significant following.
After returning to Bristol and seeking out like-minded musicians, Tim Newman was asked to contribute to this compilation of emerging Bristol artists. Tim’s contribution “Yeah That” marked the transition point from Tim’s recent work as an electronic musician towards a more diverse palette of sounds and techniques.
A chance discovery led Tim to become enamoured with an avant folk label from the Republic of Ireland called Rusted Rail. Intent on capturing the experimental but melodic atmosphere of the label, Tim created a beautiful acoustic album under the moniker The Dovetail Consort. Highlights of the so far unreleased album appeared as a 6 track EP on Rusted Rail.
